The Indie Birth Network is a program that enables people across the globe to teach our Indie Birth Free Childbirth Workshop in their communities. This is a commission based program that we hope will inspire people to teach from an “already done” model, while creating and building a powerful birth culture in a community setting.
If you’d like to be paid to teach an Indie Birth workshop in order to build (or enforce) an amazing birth community in your area, follow these steps:
- First, submit the $50 donation for the materials and become a member of the Indie Birth Private Contract Association. There is a short questionnaire to complete so that we know a little about you, your background, and where you plan to offer our workshop. We are limiting teachers to 1 PERSON OFFERING WORKSHOP PER CITY OR 30 MILES COVERED (motivation to apply early! Also, your donation will be returned to you if your application is not accepted because your geographic area is already covered; we will add you to a wait list, though, for your area). Once your membership is active, you will have access to all necessary teaching and instructional materials that you will need to prepare, learn, and carry out the free 3 hour workshop. The short book that we wrote, “Getting Shit Done” will take you through every step of the planning, promoting, etc. You will also have access to (always being updated) presentations and teaching guides. We have every step done for you, so just plug in, get prepared, and start teaching in your community!
- Using the materials we provide, spread the word about your class to attract as many people as possible. We will offer you $50USD for each workshop you complete with a minimum of 8 people who are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant someday (with couples, we consider that 1 “person” for the sake of the class reaching the most people.) In addition, you will receive $10 for each person from your class who enrolls in our 5 week online class at the special donation level of $100. Please submit the attendance log to us within 24 hours of your workshop. Email maryn at indiebirth.com or margo at indiebirth.com
**We have created this workshop to be taught by anyone that has interest in birth. You do not need to be certified in any way, or have any experience teaching or teaching birth at all. If you follow the instructions and teaching guide and are willing to teach yourself basic information, you will be “qualified” to teach this course. We are available for questions via email either from you or from anyone that attends one of your workshops.
**Upon joining the Indie Birth Network, we will add your name and location to our Indie Birth Network page for those looking for classes near them. We ideally would love teachers no closer than 30 miles away from each other; however, if you have a friend or birth partner that you’d like to teach with in your area, you could switch off teaching workshops monthly or whatever you choose, or could split the class payment after we send it to whoever is registered as the teacher. You will also be added to a closed Facebook group of all Indie Birth Network members so that you have support in teaching.**
We also look forward to posting your event on the Indie Birth Association page! Be sure to send us the link or “invite” us!
PLEASE NOTE: We are limiting this to ONE person (or team) teaching per geographical area (we are defining geographic area as roughly 200,000 people). Bigger cities (Phoenix, LA, Seattle) etc. can handle much more than one person so inquire if you have questions. If you are the only one teaching for your area, you have 5 MONTHS to teach your first workshop. If you do not hold a workshop during this time, you will NOT BE REFUNDED your initial donation AND the next interested person in line will be offered that geographical area. We reserve the right to decide who is teaching where, and/or how many teachers we want per (larger) geographic area. Our simple goal is to get more people teaching, all over.
Is This Right For You?
To be blunt, this is not right for everyone. The quickest way to make sure this is a good move for you is to listen to this podcast where we make it very clear who belongs doing this work:

The Indie Birth Network Frequently Asked Questions
PLEASE READ THESE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) BEFORE CONTACTING US WITH QUESTIONS!
Does this apply to outside the US?
Yes! We’d love to see this spread worldwide.
Why only one person per area?
This isn’t about competition but the simple fact that it does not make sense for more than one person in a geographical area to be teaching the exact same workshop as someone else.
We do not have this down to a science and we really do prefer that you potentially talk to other people in your area and work this out. Maybe you can teach it together even! Or alternate! We are not trying to micromanage people but just make it so it’s most effective. In bigger cities, we can use more people! We get the final word on how many people per location we are going to approve. (There are also more classes to come, such as postpartum workshops, etc., so ideally there will be plenty of everything to go around!)
Is there anyone in my area?
Check the map above for your answer.
When can I apply?
You can apply at any time, but if your geographic area (within 30 miles radius) is already covered, then we will let you know and return your $50 materials donation.
Will we get our donation back if there is someone already in our area?
Yes; if we determine that we must return your donation you because we feel that your area is already saturated, we will! However, there may be more than one person in larger cities.
What is the workshop overview?
It’s basically 2 presentations; one on labor and birth and one on creating this new paradigm of birth. We’ve had pretty amazing success with it here in AZ and also MN where Margo is, so although we will always be tweaking it, the version you will get it is pretty awesome.
So, this is to teach a 5 week class?
No, this allows you to get paid for teaching our free 3 hour workshop.
Is the workshop relevant to hospital birthing couples?
Yes. It is not a “homebirth” course, just a workshop on how birth works with some other stuff that will lend itself to discussion and helping direct people to what they truly want! (Although many people have come to the class, and changed their birth plans as a result!)
