About the Class
This class is suitable for anyone with an interest in learning more about breech birth. It is a practical class so it would be useful (although not essential) to have a model doll and pelvis set to practice the mechanisms and hands on manoeuvres sometimes needed in breech birth. Joy teaches about normal breech birth, presents case histories, problems, and how to resolve them.
Joy Horner trained as a nurse and a midwife in the 1980’s. She was a nurse for 12 years before deciding that midwifery was her calling. Being an advocate for those in vulnerable states was always the reason for her service. She has been a midwife for 18 years, and an Independent Homebirth midwife for the last 12. She was taught breech birth skills by the UK breech birth expert Mary Cronk MBE when they worked as Independent Midwives together. Her breech birth cases have not been straightforward, and this has helped her look for many other ways to help breech babies be born. She started teaching “Once more unto the breech” study days with Mary Cronk in 2012. Although experienced in breech birth, Joy would hate to be known as a breech expert. She teaches breech birth skills to share Mary Cronk’s wisdom and common sense approach that “breech is a normal but unusual presentation” (Mary Cronk). Joy is married with 2 grown up children who thankfully still live at home, and is gathering old cats to look after, for when her children leave the nest. Her interests include working with clay, yoga, dog walking, writing and teaching. She hopes to one day live a simple, self sufficient life. She is currently taking time off from clinical practice to heal some health issues.
